We provide calm, peaceful and nonjudgmental emotional, physical, and practical support to a woman, her newest baby, and her family in the postpartum period–any time from the first day of baby’s life to their first birthday. We seek to assist the entire family by focusing on the wellness of the mother, as we believe a well mother means a well baby. Postpartum doula support is customized to address the unique needs of each woman and family. Services include, but may not be limited to…
- Nurturing of the new mother: tips to help the post-birth healing process, discussion of rest and nutrition needs, a listening ear, assistance processing or writing down the birth experience, meal or snack preparation, and caring for the needs of the home so mom can sleep or rest
- Infant feeding support: support from a breastfeeding and bottle-feeding mother with training, experience, and additional resources for both breastfeeding moms and bottle-feeding parents, with additional training to support lactation
- New baby care education: building your confidence in the basics of infant care, such as bathing, cord care, circumcision care, dressing, cloth or disposable diapering, infant soothing techniques, and sleeping, as well as actual care of the baby so mother can address her recovery needs (sleep, baths, etc.)
- Family adjustment: support for the whole family’s adjustment to life with new baby, including fathers, siblings, and pets
- Meal preparation: a home-cooked meal made fresh and ready-to-eat, or to be frozen for later use
- Household care: laundry, linens, sweeping, vacuuming, dishes, light cleaning, plant care, pet care, dog walking, errand-running, and handling phone calls and visitors
- Sibling care: care for older children so that mother (and maybe father too!) and new baby can rest and bond
Limitations of Services: Better Beginnings does not…
1. perform medical or clinical tasks, such as exams or monitoring.
2. provide cleaning services beyond light housework as detailed above.
3. provide long-term or extensive childcare.
