Why Better Beginnings?

Why is Better Beginnings the best choice for postpartum doula care in the Twin Cities?

We are small.

We are not a very large agency, and while large agencies have their benefits, there are some real perks to working with a smaller company when searching for postpartum and lactation support for your family. Because we build small teams for each client we serve, you always know who will be assisting your family. When you hire us prenatally (or with enough notice before you need our services), you have the opportunity to meet our team—your team—of support professionals beforehand, so you can get to know each of us and so we can familiarize ourselves with your family’s needs. The postpartum time is a vulnerable, intimate and unique time, so you may not want someone you’ve never met showing up at your door—especially when sometimes part of what we do is care for the baby/babies so you can sleep or have some self-care time! In the case of hiring postpartum and in-home lactation support, small is good. Small means more personalized, streamlined, and continuous support.

We are more than one doula.

Why is having a small team of doulas better than just having one doula? The short answer is we are available to you and your needs—whatever that schedule may look like. One doula can rarely be available 40+ hours a week, and even more rarely can provide support during both days and nights. By having our team of dedicated professionals serving your family, you’re more likely to get all the support you want when you want it, because we simply can cover more hours if needed. Our small but mighty team can be with you every step of the way.

We are the only company in the Twin Cities devoted solely to the postpartum time.

Postpartum is our passion. We are focused on all things postpartum. We don’t try to do everything from pregnancy through birth and beyond, because we believe the postpartum time, in all its unique needs and challenges, deserves a focused, attentive approach. Our professionals are experts in this field, with multiple advanced trainings in things like postpartum family adjustment, physical childbirth recovery, postpartum mental health, supporting families with twins and more, postpartum nutrition, and lactation support. We don’t throw our postpartum doula hat into an array of other services as an add-on to pregnancy or birth support. Postpartum is what we do, and we do it very well.

We are independently trained and certified.

Some doula agencies train and certify their own doulas. While this is certainly a financial and business advantage for those agencies, it may not be the best for you—the client. Imagine if a school trained and certified their own teachers, or a clinic trained and certified their own doctors and nurses. Would you feel as confident in that training and certification process as you would with teachers, doctors, or nurses who were trained by actual universities and accredited programs? Better Beginnings believes families deserve the best, so we are trained and certified by independent, well-known and reputable certifying organizations, such as Doulas of North America (DONA) or CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association). These are organizations that have a long history of training and certifying postpartum doulas, and they have the experience and outside governance, such as boards of directors and advisory boards, to provide a more reliable, up-to-date, and trusted training and certification process. Also, when certified by an actual certifying organization, a doula is required to maintain certification by partaking in continuing education. This means she must continually educate and train herself further, to ensure she can provide evidence-based, up-to-date, and best practices in care of you.
